The small town of Olzai is situated in a picturesque valley of holm-oak trees and meanders along the granite banks of the Rio Bisine River, which flows through the town.
|
This pretty old town has a wonderfully kept historical centre. The cute little granite houses and the three small churches of San Giovanni Battista, S. Agostino and S. Barbara look out onto the narrow stone-paved streets.
The church of S. Barbara was built around 1200 and contains a polyptych (an alter painting) known as the “Retablo della Pestilenza”dating back to the 15th century, it was probably commissioned as an "ex-voto" |

| unknown but has been named after the town, as “Master of Olzai”, and is considered by experts to be one of the most important historical artists in Sardinia. The church of S. Barbara looks onto a small square, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the town. |
|
In another interesting nook of the town is the water mill, which dates back to the 16th century when Olzai was considered the “Granary” of Sardinia. The water mill has recently been restored to its former working order and is open either to visitors or to people wishing to grind their grain using the water driven grinding stone. |
|
A visit to the house of Carmelo Floris, one of the most famous Sardinian artists of the 20th century, is definitely worthwhile. |
The town has been recognised as one of the most active cultural centres in Sardinia, due not only to the fame of this artist but also to an important literary competition for children and youths.
A visit to Olzai would not be complete without a tour of the numerous archaeological sites around the town, which go back to the Pre-nuraghic and Nuraghic Ages.
These sites include the “dolmen” of |

S’Ena e Sa Vacca and Nuraghe Puddu, also worth visiting are the ruins of the medieval castle of Mount Gulana. |
